GMA Pallets Explained: Why the 48x40 Is America's Standard

February 1, 2025 · 5 min read

If you've ever worked in logistics, retail, or manufacturing, you've encountered the ubiquitous 48x40 inch pallet. This specific size — known as the GMA pallet — accounts for approximately 30% of all pallets produced in the United States. But why these dimensions? And why has this size maintained its dominance for decades?

The Origin Story

The 48x40 pallet was standardized by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA, now the Consumer Brands Association) in the 1960s. The association needed a pallet size that would optimize space utilization in both standard 48-foot trailers and warehouse racking systems.

The genius of 48x40 is in its mathematics: two 48x40 pallets placed side by side are 48 inches wide by 80 inches deep — fitting perfectly across the width of a standard 96-inch-wide trailer with minimal wasted space. This creates neat rows that maximize trailer utilization.

Specifications

A standard GMA pallet has these characteristics: outside dimensions of 48 inches long by 40 inches wide, four-way entry (forklifts can enter from any side), 78 nails in a standard nailing pattern, top deck of 7 boards and bottom deck of 5 boards, three stringers (the longitudinal boards that support the deck), and a weight of approximately 33-48 pounds depending on wood species.

Load Ratings

Standard GMA pallets are designed for a dynamic load (weight while being moved) of about 2,500 pounds, a static load (weight while stationary on a surface) of about 5,000 pounds, and a racking load (weight while supported only at the edges) of about 2,000 pounds. These ratings assume the pallet is in good condition and the load is evenly distributed.

Why It Still Dominates

Despite the availability of many other sizes, the 48x40 remains dominant because the entire North American supply chain infrastructure is built around it. Racking systems, conveyor systems, truck trailers, storage containers, and automated equipment are all designed for this size. Switching to a different size would require enormous capital investment across the entire supply chain.
