Understanding pallet grades is essential for getting the best value and the right pallet for your application. While there is no universal industry standard for pallet grading (each company may have slightly different criteria), the A/B/C grading system is widely used and understood.
Grade A — Premium / Like New
Grade A pallets are the highest quality recycled pallets available. They have been carefully selected for minimal wear and damage, repaired as needed, and present a near-new appearance.
Characteristics of Grade A pallets include: all boards intact with no cracks or breaks, no stains or contamination, nails fully set (no protrusions), consistent color and appearance, minimal signs of previous use.
Best applications: retail displays, pharmaceutical shipping, food industry, customer-facing logistics, automated conveyor systems.
Grade B — Standard / Good
Grade B pallets are the workhorses of the recycled pallet world. They show moderate wear and may have minor repairs, but all boards are intact and the pallet is fully functional.
Characteristics include: all boards present and structurally sound, may show some cosmetic marks or discoloration, minor repairs (replaced boards) are acceptable, nails are properly set, may have some rough spots but no hazardous conditions.
Best applications: warehouse use, general freight, distribution centers, manufacturing floors, standard shipping.
Grade C — Economy / Fair
Grade C pallets show visible wear and repairs but remain structurally sound for their intended use. They offer the lowest cost option for applications where appearance is not important.
Characteristics include: structurally sound but with visible wear, multiple repaired boards are common, may show staining or discoloration, cosmetically rough but functionally reliable, may have minor dimensional variations.
Best applications: one-way shipping, heavy-duty storage, utility applications, export shipments (when appearance doesn't matter), construction site use.
Choosing the Right Grade
The right grade depends on your specific needs. Consider: Will customers see the pallet? (Grade A) Is it for internal warehouse use? (Grade B) Is it for one-way shipping? (Grade C) What's your budget? Higher grades cost more but may be required for specific applications.
