The Environmental Impact of the Pallet Industry: Facts, Figures, and Solutions

November 25, 2024 · 7 min read

The pallet industry's environmental impact is enormous — and largely invisible to most people. Understanding the scale of the issue is the first step toward addressing it. Here are the facts, and the solutions the industry is adopting.

By the Numbers

The United States produces approximately 500 million new pallets annually, consuming roughly 4.5-5 billion board feet of lumber — equivalent to about 30% of all hardwood lumber produced in the country. An estimated 400-500 million pallets are disposed of each year, with about 15-20% ending up in landfills.

Pallets account for roughly 7% of all wood waste in the US and occupy approximately 26% of total landfill wood waste. Manufacturing a single new pallet produces approximately 28 kg of CO2 equivalent emissions when accounting for logging, transportation, milling, and assembly.

The Good News

The recycling rate for pallets is actually one of the highest of any product category. An estimated 70-80% of pallets are already recycled or reused — far better than most consumer products. The pallet industry has pioneered circular economy practices long before the term became trendy.

What More Can Be Done

Increasing the recycling rate from 80% to 95%+ would divert an additional 75-100 million pallets from landfills annually. This requires better collection infrastructure (especially in rural areas), more repair and refurbishment capacity, greater awareness among businesses about recycling options, and incentive programs that reward pallet return and recycling.

End-of-Life Solutions

Even pallets that can't be repaired have value. Used pallet wood is chipped and sold as landscape mulch (the largest end-of-life market), animal bedding for equestrian and agricultural use, biomass fuel for power generation, colored decorative mulch for residential and commercial landscaping, and raw material for particleboard and engineered wood products.

What You Can Do

Every business that uses pallets can make a difference. Buy recycled pallets instead of new whenever possible. Implement a repair program to extend pallet life. Work with a certified recycler to ensure end-of-life pallets are properly processed. Track and report your pallet sustainability metrics. And choose suppliers like Sacramento Pallet Co. who are committed to zero-waste operations.
